Sports: 

The 14th annual Norfolk Track & Field Classic was held yesterday. Norfolk Catholic’s Jon Love and Laurel/Concord’s Bethany DeLong received the Outstanding Performers Awards. Love placed first in the 110 Meter Hurdles and the 300 Hurdles in which he set a record with a time of 39.59 seconds. DeLong was the champion in 100 Meter Dash in a time of 12.39 seconds and the 200 Meter Dash in 24.90 seconds which both broke the previous record. She also was a member of the 4X400 Meter Relay team that placed first. Other Norfolk area athletes that were champions were Norfolk High’s Brad Higgins in the 800, Jared Lechner in the 3200, Anthony Juhlin in the Pole Vault, Melissa Parks in the 1600, Norfolk Catholic’s Kyle Wemhoff in the 1600, Jessica Zaruba in the Triple Jump, Nicole Brungardt in the Long Jump, and the Norfolk Catholic boys 4X800 Relay team. Crofton’s Morgan Wilken broke the meet and stadium record in the discus with a mark of 140’11.

 

In boys golf, Norfolk High placed sixth at yesterday’s Capitol City Invite in Lincoln. The Panthers totaled a 301 while champion Bellevue East carded a 289. Lance Lawson led the Panthers with his 73 which was good for ninth place. Norfolk Catholic competed at the Columbus Lakeview Invite. Wayne was the champion with a 323, the Knights 329 placed them second, and the Norfolk High JV was third with a 331. Individually, Norfolk Catholic’s Keaton Knake was the champion with a 75 while the Norfolk High JV was led by Eric Bruening’s 79 which was good for fourth place. Lutheran High Northeast were the champions at the Humphrey St. Francis Invitational. The Eagles shot a 329 team score winning in a playoff over the Norfolk Catholic JV’s 329. Humphrey St. Francis’ Randy Foltz was the champion with a 77 while Taylor Hall of the Norfolk Catholic JV placed second with a 77 and Lutheran High Northeast’s Patrick Meyer led his team with an 81 which was good for sixth.

News Briefs: 

Strong thunderstorms will be scattered across portions of the Midwest today in advance of a strong low pressure system. The National Weather Service reports windy and sharply colder weather will follow the front. Rain is expected to change over to snow over northeast Nebraska, southeast South Dakota and northwest Iowa. Heavy snow and near blizzard conditions are possible north of Sioux Falls into this evening. Highs today in northeast Nebraska will hold steady in the upper 30s. .60 of an inch of rain had fallen from midnight through 7:15 this morning at the WJAG/KEXL studios in downtown Norfolk.

Nebraska Public Power District says it has reached a 20-year agreement to buy electricity from a wind farm that will be built south of Crofton in northeast Nebraska. The 42-megawatt Crofton Hills Wind Farm will be built near Nebraska's largest wind farm, the 80-megawatt Elkhorn Ridge project near Bloomfield.

An open house and recovery celebration will be held this afternoon at the new offices of Behavioral Health Specialists in Norfolk. BHS Executive Director Connie Barnes tells WJAG NEWS that the new facility at 900 West Norfolk Avenue is twice as big as the agency's former office at Taylor and 13th Street. The open house will be from 1 until 3 p.m., with the speakers at 1:30 p.m.

Some members of the Norfolk City Council are asking for additional time to review an interlocal agreement over insurance coverage. Dave Fauss requested the tabling of the contract with the League Association of Risk Management at this week's City Council meeting. He suggested a Council sub-committee meet with LARM officials. The Council voted eight-to-nothing to table the matter.

A free adult bicycle clinic will be held Saturday in Norfolk. The Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club and Cleveland Bike and Sport are sponsoring the clinic -- which is actually open to bicycle riders of all ages. Cycling Club spokesman Jon Downey says the event will be held at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park. He tells WJAG NEWS a tire changing and flat tire clinic will be held from 9-to-11, followed by a clinic on general bike maintenance from 11-to-noon. A ride on the Cowboy Trail begins at 1:00. An evening of Irish art and poetry will be featured tonight at the Norfolk Arts Center. Assistant Director Chris Rempe tells WJAG NEWS Irish poet Desmond Egan returns to Norfolk to recite some of his award winning selections. Egan will be joined by his friend -- Norfolk City Administrator Mike Nolan -- in presenting insights on one of their friends, renowned Irish artist James McKenna. Friday's performance at the Arts Center begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free to Arts Center members -- or $5 dollars at the door for all others.
