The oldest continuously owned family radio operation in the world is branching out. WJAG AM -- first signed on the air on July 27th, 1922. WJAG is a daytime station -- with broadcast hours limited by the Federal Communications Commission to the time between dawn and dusk. Wednesday, the FCC granted permission for WJAG AM to also broadcast as 105.9-FM 24 hours a day. There are nearly 2,000 AM daylight radio stations in the United States, and fewer than 100 have received waivers to broadcast on FM translators. WJAG Incorporated Vice President and General Manager Brad Hughes says construction on WJAG FM will begin in June, and the new station is expected to be on the air no later than July 1st. Listeners will hear the same programming on WJAG AM and FM during daylight hours, with additional news-talk programming on WJAG FM overnight.

City Solid Waste Director Gary Lund told the City Council's Finance Committee Wednesday he would like permission to investigate the matter further. Lund says the city could initially start with a drop-off recycling station.
