Mitch Abeita hit a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with four RBI’s, and Erik Bird and Casey Hauptman combined on a four-hitter in Nebraska's 8-1victory over Creighton last night in Omaha. The Cornhuskers are now 39-9-1 while the Bluejays are now 33-18.

 

Former Norfolk High standout and Iowa Lakes Community College pitcher Aly Bowers has been named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference softball first team. She is currently 31-7 on the season and has 52 career wins at Iowa Lakes, which places her second all-time. Bowers’ 391 career strikeouts also rank her second all-time. The Bellevue recruit is also a two-time All-Region XI selection and 2007 NFCA All-American. Iowa Lakes is currently 54-11, which is three shy of the college record for wins, and will compete in the NJCAA World Series starting on Thursday in Normal, Illinois.

 

The State Baseball Tournament continues at various sites in Lincoln. In Class "A", in elimination games, Millard West plays Omaha Creighton Prep and Lincoln North Star takes on Omaha Westside. Grand Island faces Millard North in the winner’s bracket. In Class "B", in elimination games, Ralston battles Lincoln Pius X and Omaha Skutt goes head to head with Gretna. Omaha Gross takes on Elkhorn in the winner’s bracket.

News Briefs: 

 

Sue Fuchtman will take on Tom Schommer in the Norfolk Mayor's Race this fall. In Tuesday's primary election, Fuchtman was the leading voter getter with 3,128 votes, Schommer was second with 1,164 while Larry Sweigard was third with 211 votes. Fuchtman tells WJAG NEWS "Our hard work paid off." Schommer says he was hoping for a closer primary contest. He says he'll have to analyze what he needs to do and move forward.

Incumbent Norfolk City Councilman Jim Brenneman advances to the November election after he received the most votes in his Ward 3 contest in Tuesday's primary election. He picked up 291 votes. Brenneman will take on Vaughn Wiebusch who had 236. Chad Korth finished with 174 and Dave Hedrick had 134.

Norfolk voters say yes to Keno. The city becomes the last first class city in the state to adopt the game of chance. In Tuesday's election, 2,633 people voted in favor of Keno while 1,878 said no. City officials say it's estimated that the $400,000 a year Keno revenue would generate would go towards the city's parks and recreation needs.

A Norfolk man has defeated a former opponent in his bid to win another term on the Madison County Board of Commissioners. Richard Uhlir picked up 512 votes in Tuesday's election compared to Rod Hughes' 485. Hughes had represented District #2 on the board until Uhlir defeated him in 2000. Uhlir won re-election over Hughes in 2004 as well. Uhlir goes on to the November election where he will run unopposed since there is no Democratic candidate.

Democrat Scott Kleeb will face former governor and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns in the November contest to replace U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel. With all of precincts reporting, Kleeb had 69 percent of the vote, beating Columbus industrialist Tony Raimondo. Johanns rolled past political newcomer Pat Flynn.

Light voter turnout contributed to an early end to election night in Madison County. All ballots had been delivered to the courthouse by 9:10 p.m. -- with counting completed before 9:45 p.m. County Clerk Nancy Scheer tells WJAG NEWS voter turnout was 29.3 percent of the county's registered voters -- less than the 33 percent she had been predicting
