LeBron James scored 21 points and had 13 assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics 88-77 to tie the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals series at 2-2. James delivered four assists, a three-pointer and a thunderous dunk in the final 8:45 to help the Cavs’ outscore the Celts 20-12 in the fourth quarter. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo each 15 points apiece for the Celtics, who are 0-5 on the road in the post season.

 

The Norfolk High boys golf team has qualified for the State Meet next week after winning the A-2 District Meet at Elks Country Club in Columbus yesterday. The Panthers shot a 304 with Millard North placing second with a 321 and Columbus finishing third with a 327. Individually, Norfolk’s Scott Bruening was the champion with a 73, teammate Lance Lawson was second with a 74, Tyler Erwin was fifth after carding a 78, and Colby Blackman was tenth with a 79. Casey Mefford shot an 84 for Norfolk.

 

The Norfolk Catholic boys golf won the C-3 District Meet at the Norfolk Country Club yesterday to qualify for next week’s State Meet. The Knights carded a 336 with Ponca taking second with a 340 and Hartington Cedar Catholic placed third with a 345. Individually, West Holt’s Brett Lieswald was the champion with a 79. Norfolk Catholic’s Cord Schueth placed second with a 79 and Keaton Knake was fourth with an 81. Teammates Ben Rowse carded an 87, Keith Vrbicky shot an 89, and Chase Hughes put up a 90. The lone qualifier for Lutheran High Northeast was Caleb Svoboda who finished in a tie for tenth placed with an 85. The Eagles as a team shot a 361.

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning appeared Monday night on CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight" to defend his refusal to prosecute housing discrimination cases. Bruning again couched his stance in the nationwide debate over illegal immigration, saying Nebraska taxpayers don't want to see him representing illegal immigrants.

Some of the local races of interest on this election day include the Norfolk mayoral election and a contested City Council seat. Citizens will begin the process today of selecting the city's next mayor since Gordon Adams is not seeking re-election. The three candidates are Sue Fuchtman, Tom Schommer and Larry Sweigard. Incumbent Third Ward City Councilman Jim Brenneman faces a challenge from three individuals: Dave Hedrick, Chad Korth and Vaughn Wiebusch. The top two with the most votes after today will square off in November. Also on the local ballot, keno. Citizens will decide if they want to allow the game of chance in the city -- with the estimated $400,000 a year revenue it would generate, going toward parks and recreation. Polls will be open until 8 p.m. WJAG/KEXL will have results as soon as they are available beginning at 8 p.m.

The polling place for voters in one Norfolk precinct today has been changed. Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer says the Ward 1-3 precinct has been moved from the former First Christian Church on North 13th Street to St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 1010 Georgia Avenue.

The Norfolk Public School District has sold one of its rural school buildings. Superintendent Marlene Uhing said at Monday night's Board of Education meeting, Winter School at 300 West Eisenhower Avenue has been sold to the Educational Service Unit #8 in Neligh for approximately $249,000. Winter and another former Class One building - Reiche -- are being closed this spring by NPS. Students in those buildings have been given boundary exception priority to attend other elementary buildings in the district.

The head of the Nebraska State Patrol was among speakers during Monday's Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Day Ceremony in Norfolk. Colonel Bryan Tuma says it's important not to forget the men and women who've laid down their lives for our protection. Tuma, who began his career with the Troop "B" Division in Norfolk, was joined at the ceremony at Prospect Hill Cemetery by Senator Mike Flood and Norfolk Police Chief Bill Mizner. It was held at the grave of Trooper of Don Matejka, who died in the line of duty in December, 1989.
