Megan Gibson threw a three-hit shutout and also drove in a run as Texas A&M beat Nebraska 5-0 yesterday to win its first Big XII championship. Nebraska came into the tournament as the last place team in the conference and became the first Number ten seed to reach the championship game. A win would have given the Cornhuskers an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Former Wayne High standout Molly Hill, the winning pitcher in Nebraska's upsets of Kansas, second-seeded Oklahoma and Texas Tech, gave up five runs on ten hits for the Cornhuskers. The Huskers conclude 2008 with a 25-28 mark. Hill was named to the Big XII Championship All Tournament Team.

News Briefs:

Damage is estimated at $40,000 following a Norfolk house early Sunday morning. The Norfolk Fire Division reports the owner of the home at 802 South 25th Street, Kenny Borgmyer, reported smoke coming out of the attic at about 1:50 a.m. It took fire crews about two hours to gain access to the entire attic area affected by fire, which was in the insulation. They remained on scene until about 5:40 a.m. clearing hot spots and extinguishing the fire. A Fire Division spokesman says the cause of the fire was found to be "over fused circuits" which caused the wiring in the attic to overheat and ignite the insulation and wood components of the roof and ceiling. No injuries were reported.

Mayoral Candidate Tom Schommer has decided to directly answer allegations that he was involved in recruiting Larry Sweigard to also run for the position. Some of Schommer's detractors have suggested that he encouraged a third candidate in the mayor's race so the issue would be on the May 13th ballot, essentially providing a public opinion poll at taxpayer expense. Schommer tells WJAG NEWS he did not encourage Sweigard to run for mayor, he did not help Sweigard fill out filing forms, and he did not pay Sweigard's filing fees.
