The Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic won their NBA playoff games last night. Kobe Bryant's 34 points carried the Lakers to a 120-110 win over Utah after Rashard Lewis poured in 33 points to lead the Magic past Detroit 111-86. The Lakers lead their conference semifinal series 2-0 while the Magic are within 2-1 in their series with the Pistons.

 

The Norfolk High track & field team competed at yesterday’s A-2 District Meet in Lincoln. The Panther boys finished in fifth place with 64 points while champion Lincoln North Star netted 85. The Norfolk girls took third place with 69 points while champion Millard North scored 180 points. Individually, in the boys criteria, qualifying for next week’s State Meet are Andrew Ellsworth and Anthony Juhlin in the Pole Vault, Kyle Bartlett in the Shot put, Julian Newsom in the 100, Nate Olson in the 1600, Jared Lechner in the 3200, and the 400 & 3200 meter relay teams. Ellsworth was first in the Pole Vault with a height of 14’2. In the girls results, qualifying for next week’s State Meet are Kelsey Vesley in the Pole Vault, Dani Stahla & Kendra Noel in the High Jump, Allery Brommer in the Shot put, Katrina Leader in the Discus, Alexa Nelson in the Triple Jump, Melissa Parks in the 1600, and the 400 & 1600 meter relay teams. Stahla was first in the High Jump with a mark of 5’1 while Nelson won the Triple Jump with a distance of 35’5.

 

Former Norfolk High standout and Nebraska Wesleyan softball player Klancy Nixon has been named to the 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference Softball All-Conference team. She was named to the first team as a shortstop. Nixon led the team with a .385 batting average with a team-high 47 hits. She also led the team in triples, home runs, RBI’s, and stolen bases. Nixon leaves the team appearing on 13 Nebraska Wesleyan season and career all-time top ten lists. She started every game at shortstop the past three seasons. Nebraska Wesleyan finished 22-16 this past season.

Norfolk Police report a number of businesses suffered damage from graffiti vandals sometime during the night on Monday. Police Captain Leon Chapman says the locations range from the 1200 block of North 13th Street to the 2600 block of Norfolk Avenue. Other areas hit include the downtown area on Norfolk Avenue, South 7th Street and the 500 and 600 blocks of Phillip Avenue. Most of the graffiti consisted of a drawing of a Spade, like in a deck of cards, and initials of SRH, some had a three point crown added. Police are still investigating in an effort to identify who may be involved in this damage.

The campaign to build a Northern College of Nursing on the campus of Northeast Community College in Norfolk is at the half-way mark -- and ready to branch out. Ron Stauffer, general campaign chairman, tells WJAG NEWS the nearly $6.5-million pledged so far has come from Madison, Pierce and Stanton counties. He says the fundraising effort is ahead of schedule, and he hopes to wrap it up this fall and break ground on the new building in the spring.

An observance to mark Children's Mental Health Awareness Week will be held today in Norfolk. Tiffani Cullin Johnson -- Service Coordinator for the Parent-to-Parent Network -- says everyone is welcome to join them this afternoon from 4-to-6 in the main shelter at Skyview Lake -- for a picnic and learn more about children's mental health issues and services. She tells WJAG NEWS they want to create an awareness about the importance of good mental health care and better services for children with emotional, behavioral and social challenges and their families.

515 vehicles hauled in discarded items -- from computers to old refrigerators to aluminum cans -- during this past weekend's annual Nucor-Vulcraft Scrap Day in Norfolk. Nucor Environmental Manager John Kinter tells WJAG NEWS all the 60 tons collected will now be recycled. He says the 60 tons is up by about eleven tons over last year and comparable to what was collected in 2006. They plan to do it again next May.

A Colorado man on a bicycle ride from Chicago to his home just outside Denver, made a stop in Norfolk Wednesday -- on day 12 of his 20 day ride. Glen Hanket averages about 4,000 miles a year on his bike. The 52-year old Broomfield, Colorado, software engineer tells WJAG NEWS his ride this year is designed to create an awareness of how damaging litter is to the environment. Hanket, who walked from Maine to Oregon about 15-years ago with wife on his litter awareness campaign, spoke to about two dozen people last night at the Norfolk Public Library.
