Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey called yesterday a "huge" day after the city and NCAA came to an agreement that will keep the College World Series in Omaha through at least 2030. The Division I baseball championship has been held in Omaha every year since 1950. Omaha's strong support for the event is a point of civic pride. The C.W.S also is good for business, injecting an estimated $41 million into Omaha's economy during last year's ten-day run. The summer tradition also gives the city national exposure on ESPN, which advertises its coverage as the "Road to Omaha" in the weeks leading to the Series. A succession of Omaha mayors have made it a priority to make sure Omaha remains the event's home. In February, Fahey and his stadium oversight committee unveiled plans for a 24,000-seat, $140 million stadium that would open in 2011.

The Norfolk High girls tennis team competed in yesterday’s Columbus Invitational. The meet featured only three teams as two schools dropped out. Norfolk recorded a 1-1 record for the day as they beat Norris 4-0 and lost to Columbus 3-1. Kym Caddell went 1-1 in #1 Singles, Katelyn Olenich recorded a 2-0 record in #2 Singles, Jessica Cleveland & Alexa Fink went 1-1 in #1 Doubles, and Megan Hult & Melissa Coolidge sported a 1-1 record in #2 Doubles.

The Omaha World Herald has updated it’s girls track & field leaders. In the 100 meters, Norfolk Catholic’s Nicole Brungardt is tied for second in 12.2 seconds. She is also eighth in the 200 meters in 25.8 seconds and fourth in the long jump with a mark of 17’11 ½. In the 1600, Norfolk High’s Melissa Parks is sixth with a time of 5:23.37. In the Triple Jump, Lutheran High Northeast’s Karissa Blank is ninth with a mark of 35’9 ½ and Norfolk Catholic’s Jessica Zaruba is tenth with a distance of 35’9.
