Sports: 

Nebraska converted eight hits and two Creighton errors into a 13-run fifth inning to break open a 16-7 victory, the Cornhuskers' second win in as many nights against the Bluejays. Jake Opitz and Craig Corriston had three hits apiece and the

Huskers had 18 in all against seven Creighton pitchers on last night. The Huskers banged out ten extra-base hits, including two doubles each by Corriston, Bryce Nimmo and Cody Neer and a triple by D.J. Belfonte, who drove in three runs. Michael Mariot got the win with three innings of relief of starter Erik Bird, who pitched the first four innings. Zak Moore took the loss for Creighton, giving up three runs, two earned, in 2/3 of an inning. Moore relieved Pat Venditte, who worked the first 3 1/3 innings in his second start of the season. Nebraska improves to 30-7-1 while Creighton drops to 25-15.

 

The Norfolk Track & Field Classic is held for the 14th consecutive year today. Approximately 58 schools from the northeast Nebraska area will be represented. In the boys events, Norfolk High will be represented in twelve events, Norfolk Catholic in ten events, and Lutheran High Northeast two events. In the girls criteria, Norfolk High will be represented in 13 events, Norfolk Catholic in nine events, and Lutheran High Northeast two events. The meet starts at 4:45.

 

The Omaha World Herald has updated it’s girls track & field leaders. In the 100, Norfolk Catholic’s Nicole Brungardt is tied for second in a time of 12.2, she’s tied for ninth in a time of 26.1 in the 200, and eighth in the Long Jump with a mark of 17’7. In the 400 relay, Norfolk Catholic is tied for eighth in 51.0. In the Triple Jump, Lutheran High Northeast’s Karissa Blank is sixth with a jump of 35’9 ½ and Norfolk Catholic’s Jessica Zaruba is ninth with a mark of 35’ 4 ½.

Morrill County authorities in western Nebraska say a tornado hit a house between Bridgeport and Dalton Wednesday night. There was no immediate word on injuries or damages caused by the storm. There were several reports of tornadoes near Bridgeport yesterday as a spring storm brought hail and strong winds to the Panhandle.

Nebraska's final Democratic superdelegate endorsed Barack Obama Wednesday, saying the senator has shown that he can activate Democrats in the mostly Republican state. Audra Ostergard is the sixth Nebraska superdelegate to pledge support for Obama for her party's presidential nomination.

Time is getting short for those who need to register to vote or change their registrations for the May 13th Primary Election. Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer tells WJAG NEWS voters can register by mail or at their local city clerk's office through tomorrow. After that, they will need to come to her office in Madison. The final deadline to register to vote in the Primary Election is Friday, May 2.

City of Norfolk officials are encouraging landowners who live in and near the city's West Water Well Field to attend a meeting tonight -- a follow-up to a gathering held two years ago to discuss a protection plan for the well field. Norfolk Public Works Director Dennis Smith tells WJAG NEWS the plan will give them a document to refer to if there are any concerns. The West Water Well Field is located generally four miles west of 37th Street and north from the Elkhorn River towards Eisenhower Avenue. Thursday night's meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center.

A book signing and special activities for children are just part of the plans for this year's Northeast Nebraska Master Gardener's Plant Fair. The fair will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. And Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Cox Activities Center at Northeast Community College. Master Gardener Robin Jones tells WJAG NEWS there will be seminars on perennials, grapes and hardy roses.Children are invited to a special corner where they will be able to plant something to take home with them. There will also be plant sales, vendors and door prizes. Special guest will be Jan Riggenbach, author of "Gardening for Fun." There is no admission charge.

The city of Norfolk will have a public tree planting Friday morning to celebrate Arbor Day and work toward Tree City USA recognition for Norfolk. The celebration will begin at 11:30 Friday morning in Skyview Park. A Mayor's Proclamation will be read, followed by the planting of a limber pine tree east of the north rest room buildings. Steve Rasmussen, Nebraska Forest Service District Forester, will discuss how to properly plant a tree and answer tree questions. Kim Radenz, Northeast Community College horticulturist, will discuss how to choose a good tree to plant.
