News Briefs:

Charges will not be filed against Madison County Attorney Joe Smith in a federal investigation of his alleged relationship with a convicted drug dealer. In a letter to Smith's lawyer, U.S. Attorney Joe Stecher says there is not enough evidence to warrant charges against Smith. The federal investigation and wiretaps of Smith's cell phone came to light in June 2005. Smith's attorney, James Martin Davis, tells WJAG NEWS the wiretaps were related to federal indictments in March 2005 of six people on charges of distributing methamphetamine.

Although Nebraska drivers are paying a record average $3.50 a gallon for regular gas, that price is a penny cheaper than the national average - also a record. Experts say the prices - listed on the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report - are being pushed by all-time high prices for oil. Oil surged past $120 a barrel today on Asian markets. The Nebraska record breaks the state mark set only a day earlier of $3.49 a gallon for regular. A year ago, the average price for regular gas across the state was $2.84 a gallon.

A longtime Norfolk barbershop is planning to move to a new location. Kent McCallum of Plaza Stylists and Barbers was before the Norfolk Planning Commission Tuesday, requesting a zoning change on property he's purchased at the corner of 13th Street and Taylor Avenue. He says he wants to construct a small strip mall on the lot. McCallum says the new location will also allow them to hire five additional employees. He says he's currently negotiating a lease with a bank to be another tenant on the property which is the former Mueting and Stoffer law office. The Planning Commission voted seven-to-one to forward a change in the city's comprehensive plan and for a zoning change from office district to service commercial district to the City Council for its consideration.
