New Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says he's off to a good start in his attempt at converting the new age football players recruited by Bill Callahan into old-school Nebraska Cornhuskers. All the players were recruited by Callahan, and many were drawn by his pro football pedigree. Pelini said he's driven to make his players want to play as much for the 'N' on their helmets as for the NFL. Pelini says that means the players are expected to play with passion and discipline and be fundamentally sound. Pelini said his message to his players about committing to the greater good of the program was reinforced when more than 80,000 fans turned out for the spring game on Saturday.

News Briefs:

Norfolk Police Chief Bill Mizner says the division's 2007 annual report shows declines in a number of categories. But he told the City Council Monday night, having a decrease in their personnel ranks could be a contributing factor. Mizner says having less personnel on staff may have contributed to decreases in several categories last year such as calls for service, criminal calls, total arrests and citations, alcohol and juvenile arrests. He says they are currently down four officers. Two candidates have just completed basic training and the division plans to hire two more officers. Mizner says they hope to be back at full strength later this year.

Monday night's Norfolk City Council meeting was the last for City Administrator Mike Nolan. Mayor Gordon Adams thanked Nolan for his 28-years of service to the community and said he will be difficult to replace. Instead of looking back on his nearly three decades here, Nolan reviewed the last legislative session and its impact on the city. Nolan is stepping down April 28th to take a new job with the Nebraska League Association of Risk Management out of Lincoln.

Students at Nebraska's three state colleges will have to pay more to attend classes. The Nebraska State College System board of trustees approved a 6 percent increase in tuition for the 2008-09 school year. With the increase, resident undergraduate students taking full course loads will pay $97.50 more in tuition each semester.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will offer a minor in energy sciences beginning with the fall semester. Professor Ron Yoder says studying energy sciences makes sense in Nebraska because of the state's role in producing renewable energy -- including ethanol and wind and solar power.

Most Americans have been slow to adapt to mobile banking with their cell phones and PDAs. But a new telephone survey suggests that members of "Generation Y" are increasingly coming around to the idea. Among other things, the survey found 21 percent of consumers between 18 and 34 use their cell phone for mobile banking transactions, compared to 10 percent overall.
