State lawmakers have turned down the governor's veto of a measure to require Nebraska towns with at least 1,000 residents to add fluoride to their drinking water. Governor Dave Heineman called the bill an unfunded mandate. Communities can opt out of the proposed law. The governor said Thursday the cost of a ballot initiative to do so would be passed on to taxpayers.

A new method of taxing fuel in the state has received final approval from the Legislature. It won't cause drivers to pay more in the short term, because an appropriation bill attached to the measure was removed by lawmakers. But the decision to begin taxing fuel at the wholesale level could eventually lead to higher pump prices. If the appropriation measure hadn't been removed, the fuel tax could have jumped by about 3 cents per gallon.
