New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi says Joba Chamberlain's father is doing a little better in the hospital. The hard-throwing reliever left the Yankees Monday after his father collapsed at home in Nebraska. The pitcher was placed on the bereavement list and will miss a two-game series against Boston that begins tonight at Yankee Stadium. Girardi says Joba is by his father's side, and the whole team is praying for the family. Harlan Chamberlain raised Joba as a single dad.

The Nebraska Legislature is following through on a compromise to provide money for roads that many say need to be built. It comes in place of a gas tax hike proposed by Senator Deb Fischer of Valentine. Legislative Speaker Mike Flood says $5-million would come out of the cash reserve each year for the next three years. The Norfolk lawmaker tells WJAG NEWS $5 million of that could be used to help secure $23-million in federal funding towards expanding Highway 35 in northeast Nebraska. The bill still needs to be passed on final reading.
