The Denver Nuggets have the upper hand on Golden State as the two teams battle for the NBA's final Western Conference playoff berth. The Nuggets whipped Houston 111-94, which also allowed the Los Angeles Lakers to take control of their fate as they try to grab the top seed in the West. The Lakers hammered San Antonio 106-85, putting L.A. a half-game ahead of New Orleans.

Craig Corriston drove in four runs and Nick Sullivan has three RBIs and scored four times, leading Nebraska to a 14-5 victory over Oklahoma State yesterday. The Cornhuskers (25-6-1, 11-3-1 Big XII) avoided being swept in a conference series for the first time since losing three straight to Baylor in May 2006. Nebraska scored four runs in the third inning on two errors, a walk and fielder's choice to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. The Huskers added three more in the fourth on a bases-loaded wild pitch and Corriston's two-run single. Dan Jennings earned the win with four innings of one-hit shutout relief of starter Aaron Pribanic.

The three candidates running for mayor of Norfolk recently shared their views on underage drinking with members of Project: Extra Mile, a group dedicated to prevent underage drinking. Project Coordinator Stacey Riley tells WJAG NEWS community leaders and officials can help prevent underage drinking by involving youth more in civic affairs. She says the three candidates -- Tom Schommer, Sue Fuchtman and Larry Sweigard -- all seem to have a sincere desire to keep kids safe and to promote the message that underage drinking is unhealthy, unsafe and illegal.

Nebraska Public Power District spokesman Mark Becker says the state's largest wind farm to be constructed near Bloomfield must be generating electricity by the end of the year if private developers are to be assured of receiving federal production tax credits. NPPD announced last month that it has entered into a 20-year contract to purchase wind-generated power from private development partners Midwest Energy and Elkhorn Ridge Wind.

The alleys in downtown Norfolk look a little brighter today. Volunteers spent Sunday afternoon sprucing up the alleyways as part of a downtown promotion this summer to get shoppers to use the rear entrances of retailers during a sidewalk replacement project. Downtown spokesman Amy Sanderhoff tells WJAG NEWS volunteers were split into four teams to clean up the alleys behind Norfolk Avenue from First to Eighth Streets. The next phase in the redevelopment of downtown began a week ago today. Sidewalks along the Avenue are being replaced in the eight block stretch. Work is set for completion in September. New ornamental lighting and landscaping are also part of the project.
