Bo Pelini says he's seen no indication that Nebraska has fallen off the radar screen in college football. The first-year Nebraska coach said there have been warm receptions wherever he and his assistants have traveled around the country. It's been a decade since the Cornhuskers have won a national title. Pelini says he realizes that ten years seems like a long time to a 17-year-old prospect. Pelini said it helps that the parents and coaches of high school players are well aware of the history and tradition of Nebraska football. Pelini says he and his assistants have a great product to talk about with kids, whether discussing academics or athletics.

Members of the Norfolk Planning Commission agree with residents of a west Norfolk housing area that the developers should have addressed a matter of expanding the area to include multi-family housing. At a meeting Tuesday, Fox Ridge Estates Homeowners' Association President Richard Richardson said many of the residents were told that the area would remain single family residential. Richardson says they oppose plans by Carhart Lumber to amend a planned development to put two triplex units near 34th Street and Prospect Avenue. Commissioners voted 8-1 to deny Carhart's request.

The New York Giants were able to win three NFC playoff games and a Super Bowl without Jeremy Shockey last winter. Now Tom Coughlin's club is going to find out how it does without Shockey for an entire season and beyond. The Giants have traded the disgruntled tight end to New Orleans for a second- and fifth-round pick in next year's draft. Shockey broke his left leg in mid-December and missed the Giants' post season run to a Super Bowl championship. He had 371 catches for 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns with the Giants after being taken with the 14th overall pick in the 2002 draft. Shockey says he's looking forward to hooking up with Saints QB Drew Brees and says it's "going to be a fun year."

Bo Pelini says he doesn't expect fans to give him a honeymoon period as he settles into his job as Nebraska's first-year head football coach. He also says he isn't worried about fans agreeing or disagreeing with his decisions as he tries to restore the Cornhuskers to national prominence. Pelini said at Big XII media day in Kansas City yesterday that he has a plan for rebuilding the program and he plans to stick with it no matter what anyone else says. Job one is to strengthen a defense that was one of the nation's worst last season. Pelini says he's ecstatic about Joe Ganz at quarterback. The coach said Ganz is a better athlete than he originally gave him credit for in 2007.

The Norfolk City Council has approved having Mayor Gordon Adams send a letter to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission urging it to classify flavored alcoholic beverages, or alcopops such as Mike's Hard Lemonade, as distilled spirits instead of beer. The request comes from Project: Extra Mile -- a statewide network of community coalitions in Nebraska working to prevent underage drinking. Executive Director Diane Riibe -- who appeared at Monday night's City Council meeting -- said aside from the safety aspect towards young people, the Commission's ruling also means that over 2 million dollars in state tax revenue is being lost every year because of the Commission's ruling.

The Irishman locked up the 137th British Open with an eagle on the 17th hole en route to a final-round 1-under-par 69. Harrington finished four strokes ahead of Ian Poulter, who also shot a final-round 69. Australia's Greg Norman started play with a two-shot lead in his valiant attempt at a third Open title. Jason Taylor is leaving the only NFL team he's known, going from the Miami Dolphins to Washington in a trade the Redskins hope will bolster their depleted defense. The move came about nine hours after starting defensive end Phillip Daniels was carted away from the practice field with a season-ending left knee injury on day one of training camp. The Redskins gave the Dolphins a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round choice in 2010 for Taylor. The six-time Pro Bowl defensive end was 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Taylor fell out of favor in Miami after spending his off season on the TV show "Dancing With the Stars" rather than working out with teammates.
